Cambridge, MA ---WPI's defense of its NEWMAC Softball Tournament will begin a day later than expected as a heavy mid-day rain shower postponed the opening games at MIT on Wednesday afternoon.

The fourth-seeded Crimson and Gray was scheduled to face fifth-seeded Babson at 2:30pm before being pushed backed to 3pm and eventually postponed to Thursday.  The two teams are again scheduled for a 2:30pm first pitch tomorrow with the winner advancing to face top-seeded MIT at 4:30pm.

It was a star-studded half of the bracket slatted for Cambridge as all three teams advanced to an NCAA Regional final a season ago with WPI earning Regional and Super Regional championships en route to a Division III World Series appearance.   A somewhat similar scenario played out with the NEWMAC Tournament a season ago, with the first day being totally washed out.  It didn't seem to hinder the three teams impacted on Wednesday as they ended up as the final three teams standing during the weekend with WPI claiming its third crown in seven years.

The other half of the bracket was able to play their opening games on Wednesday with third-seeded Coast Guard blanking sixth-seeded Wheaton 2-0 in the opener before second seed and host Springfield shutout the Bears 1-0 in the nightcap.
