Worcester Polytechnic Institute announces Engineers Earn 84 Selections to Spring NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Squad
WESTWOOD, MA --- WPI student-athletes combined to earn 84 total spots on the 2023 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Academic All-Conference Teams this semester. The list included 43 from the track and field teams — 25 from the women's team, which ranked second in the conference, and 18 from the men's team, the third-best number in the league. The baseball team had 19 honorees, which ranked third in the conference, while the rowing team had 15 selections, and the softball team added seven.
Highlighting the list were seven student-athletes who became rare four-time honorees. From the men's track and field team, graduate students Devin Coughlin (Newton, MA), Alex Simoneau (Attleboro, MA), and Andrew Yatsuhashi (Reading, MA) all earned the spring honor for the fourth time, as did women's team members and graduate students Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA) and Nicole Whipkey (Portland, ME). Graduate student Caitlin Kean (Shrewsbury, MA) from the rowing team and graduate student Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) from the softball team rounded out the four-timers club.
An additional 21 Engineers earned their third selections to the conference's academic list. Eight members from the women's track team earned that distinction, including seniors Abby Calistra (North Attleboro, MA), Emily Deptula (Watertown, CT), Elise Deshusses (Chapel Hill, NC), Lora Dufresne (Sutton, MA), Kaylee Gladu (Woonsocket, RI), Grace Hadley (North Reading, MA), Charlotte Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY), and Michaela Mattson (Marion, MA). Five from the rowing team made the list for the third time -- graduate student Alexa Freglette (Staten Island, NY), and seniors Maren Cork (Seattle, WA), Lilly Earley (Wellesley, MA), Isabel Nearing (Cochecton, NY), and Logan Rinaldi (Rumford, RI).
Three each from the baseball and softball teams nabbed their third honor, including baseball seniors Jeffrey Brennan (Amsterdam, NY), Kyle DeRoma (Dracut, MA), and Kyle Johns (Milltown, NJ), and softball players, graduate student Gabriella Cerbo (Middletown, NJ), and seniors Alicia Salvalzo (Hudson, NH) and Sophia Togneri (Hudson, MA). Additionally, seniors David Reynolds (Andover, NH) and Andrew Sifferlen (Sudbury, MA) from the men's track team were named three-time honorees.
The Engineers' women's track team counted eight two-time awardees and an additional seven first-timers. Repeat selections included juniors Deidra Anderson (Billerica, MA), Morgan Collins (Hudson, MA), Kayla Condon (Wethersfield, CT), Leithsa Dimanche (Billerica, MA), Viv Evans (Newtown Square, PA), Caitlin Guilfoyle (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY), Isabel Hallal (Foxboro, MA), and Sarah Ossing (Catonsville, MD). First-time members of the team were graduate student Amelia Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY), juniors Jazmyn Ewing (Worcester, MA) and Elizabeth Matticoli (Kendall Park, NJ), and sophomores Elie Bowman (Oakdale, CT), Lauren Mitcheson (West Bridgewater, MA), Piper O'Connell (North Attleboro, MA), and Olivia Spielberger (Hingham, MA).
On the men's track team, five earned repeat selections, including juniors Tristan Andrew (Newtown, CT), Matt Gadziala (Clinton, NY), Matt Lacadie (Milford, CT), Andrew Peyton (Merrimack, NH), and Jack Robertson (Uxbridge, MA). First-time honorees were senior Nicholas Fiorenza (Oakton, VA) and sophomores Jack Adiletta (Bolton, MA), Peter Allen (Acton, MA), Lucas Anthony (Lincoln, MA), Matthew Catuccio (Trumbull, CT), Sean Corman (Waterford, CT), Justin Liona (Westford, MA), and Michael Neff (West Hartford, CT).
The baseball team had nine two-time selections to the academic list, including seniors Chris Cavallaro (West Haven, CT) and Joe Salvon (West Springfield, MA), and juniors DJ Brooks (Danvers, MA), Russell Chase (North Hero, VT), Jake DelMonte (Southington, CT), Jacob Hand (Niskayuna, NY), Terrence McFarland (Needham, MA), Noah Pins (Holden, MA), and Owen Radcliffe (Holliston, MA). Seven first-time awardees were graduate student Matt Penkala (Warren, RI), senior Everett Wonson (Wenham, MA), juniors Andrew Gray (Millersville, MD) and Joseph Peregrim (Watervliet, NY), and sophomores Andrew Cash (Marlboro, MA), Gavin George (Salem, NH), and Scott West (Durham, NC).
From the rowing team, four earned their second selection and another four were first-time honorees. Juniors Grace McCarthy (Ludlow, MA), Jaya Mills (Wayland, MA), Megan Tupaj (Amherst, NH), and Jules Prisco (Pelham, NY) were all repeat selections, while sophomores Samantha Arroyas (Uxbridge, MA), Ryan Dillon (Rutland, MA), Sofia Eckerson (Derry, NH), and Nicole Miller (Hanover, MA) made it for the first time.
Wrapping up the WPI spring selections were two-time selections in juniors Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA) and Alex Sheehan (Marion, MA), and first-time honoree in sophomore Kelly Pritchard (Orange, CT).
Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2022 fall semester, achieved second year academic status at their institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.
The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference consists of 11 highly selective institutions committed to academic excellence: Babson College, Clark University, U.S Coast Guard Academy, Emerson College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
