Winona State University announces NCAA Division II Men's Golf Regional wraps up at The Bridges

WINONA, Minn. – Over 100 of the top NCAA Division II men's golfers in the country took part in the 2023 NCAA Division II Midwest / Central Super Regional Tournament hosted by Winona State University and held at The Bridges Golf Course in Winona on May 11-13.

Associate Athletic Director Melanie Brunsdon said, "Winona State Athletics is grateful for the opportunity to showcase the beauty of The Bridges and the greater Winona area through this event. Even more so, we are appreciative of all the work that went on behind the scenes to put on the regional tournament. Thank you to The Bridges staff, campus and community volunteers, our corporate sponsors and Winona State athletics department staff for their time and efforts." Brunsdon went on to note, " And a special thanks to our WSU golf coaches Jeff and Xenia Straight, as they served as the main catalysts behind hosting regionals."

Grand Valley State University took both the team title and had the top individual finisher, as the Lakers' Charles Delong took medalist honors in shooting a three-day total of 207 (-6). GVSU shot a team total of 857 (+5)  is joined by five other teams in qualification for the 2023 NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championships to be held May 22-26 at Avalon Lakes Country Club in Warren, Ohio.

WSU Director of Golf Jeff Straight said, "We were honored and humbled to hear all of the positive feedback from these 28 different colleges and universities about The Bridges, our community and the tournament itself. For the past four days, Winona was home to one of the best collections of NCAA Division II golf programs and players in the country, and our community and Winona State welcomed them with open arms.  This was a great weekend for golf at The Bridges and in our town."

Winona State standout Alessandro Trenta qualified for the competition as an individual and finished with a 224 (+11), tied for 50th overall in the field of 108 participants. Trenta, a freshman from Killwangen, Switzerland, recently was named both the NSIC Player of the Year and NSIC Newcomer of the Year, following a sensational 2022-23 season.

The Bridges offered the highly competitive field a challenging course, playing as a par 71 and 6,778 total yardage. Dozens of volunteers from the Winona State Warrior Club played key roles in running the event, while Visit Winona and The Watkins Company both had a local presence for the hundreds of guests on hand.

The six qualifying teams to advance to the 2023 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships were Grand Valley State, Missouri S&T, Maryville University, Harding University, the University of Southern Arkansas and Washburn University. Two individuals also advanced, Ethan Wilkins of Henderson State and Donnie Professori from the University of Findlay.
