Winona State University announces Baumgartner leads WSU to rubber-match victory over UMary

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University baseball team earned a 6-3 win in the rubber match against UMary, scoring six unanswered runs to win the series 2-1.
 
University of Mary struck first, scoring three unearned runs in the top of the second inning to take an early lead.
 
Winona State settled in defensively as starter Pierce Gritzmaker went four innings on the mound and allowed three unearned runs on three hits.
 
Steele Beatty led the bottom of the fourth inning off with a double which was followed by a Joshua Hawksford single. Nick Herbst then drove in Beatty on a sacrifice fly to narrow the UMary lead to 3-1.
 
In the fifth, Winona State tagged on two more runs as Derek Baumgartner doubled to score Mason Trocke and Kyle Yu and tie the game at three apiece.
 
Baumgartner drove in two more runs in the sixth inning to extend the Warrior lead to 5-3. WSU added an insurance run in the seventh on a Carter Brinkman single to give Winona State a 6-3 lead with two innings to go.
 
Kyle GendronChandler Schmidt, and Davis Zeutzius pitched the final five innings for the Warriors and allowed zero runs to give WSU the victory.

Gendron struck out five of the 11 batters he faced and earned the win on the mound while Zeutzius picked up his third save of the season.
 
Baumgartner led the Warriors at the plate with a 3-for-5 day, driving in four runs. Yu added two hits for WSU while Brinkman and Herbst drove in the other two Warrior runs.
 
Jayden Smith took the loss on the mound for UMary, allowing two runs in 1.2 innings pitched. Krece Papierski went 3-5 with a run to lead the Marauders in the batter's box.
 
Winona State will be in action on Wednesday, April 12 as they host Southwest Minnesota State in a doubleheader with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 1:30pm at Loughrey Field.
