(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) Chris Baumann (So., Snow Hill, Md. / Snow Hill) threw eight innings of shutout baseball while relievers Orlando Estevez (Gr., Key West, Fla. / Key West) and Michael Jeffries (Sr., Ranson, W.Va. / Jefferson) tag-teamed to finish the job in the ninth as Wilson blanked St. Elizabeth Friday. It was the first shutout of the season for the Phoenix who clinched a home playoff game on Wednesday with the victory.

Before the game, Jeffries was honored and recognized along with Michael Marrale (5th, Sykesville, Md. / Old Dominion), Michael McGee (Sr., Frederick, Md. / Thomas Johnson), and Brian DeCarlo (Jr., Gaithersburg, Md. / Hagerstown CC).

The Basics

Score: Wilson 6, St. Elizabeth 0

Venue: Henninger Field

Records: Wilson 31-7, 13-3 CSAC; St. Elizabeth 13-23, 7-9 CSAC

How It Happened

  • Baumann was locked in from the start and worked two perfect innings before the Eagles recorded their first hit. The visitors ended up landing two and loaded the bases with an infield error, but the south paw was able to work his way out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.
  • The Phoenix were able to generate some momentum offensively in the bottom of the frame and used it to take the lead. Garrett Griebel (Fy., Kent Island, Md. / Kent Island) led off with a single through the right side and switched places with Jordan McKenzie (Jr., White Plains, Md. / Southern Maryland) on a fielder's choice before Dean Mercer (Sr., Dunedin, Fla. / Clearwater Central Catholic) lifted off with a home run to left.
  • From there, the Blue and White kept nickel and diming the Eagles to score solo runs in the next four innings. Doc Daniels (So., Deal Island, Md. / Crisfield) led off the fourth with a double to left and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Daphney (So., Countryside, Fla. / Brunswick). One inning later, Marrale blasted a pitch over the fence in left center for a 4-0 lead.
  • Daphney recorded another RBI in the bottom of the sixth as his single to left center allowed Alex Seidleck (So., Crownsville, Md. / Indian Creek) to score from second. Daniels closed the scoring as his base hit brought in Mercer in the seventh.
  • The Phoenix battery remained in control on the mound and prevented the Eagles from getting past first base the rest of the way. After Baumann exited the game, Estevez retired two batters in the ninth with one on a strikeout before Jeffries fanned the final batter to end the game.

Inside The Numbers

  • Marrale, Seidleck and Daniels all finished the game 2-for-4. Marrale's home run was his 10th round trip of the season and separated himself from fellow Phoenix McKenzie for most in the CSAC.
  • Baumann's performance was arguably the best of his collegiate career. His 8.0 innings worked are the most in his two years as a Phoenix. He also struck out at least six batters for the fifth time this season. He improved to 9-0 on the year and Wilson is 14-0 in games he's pitched this season.
  • Wilson outhit St. Elizabeth 10-5 today. It's the 28th game this season the Phoenix have reached double digits in hits.

Up Next

The Phoenix will now head to Morristown, N.J., to complete the series with the Eagles and wrap up the regular season on Saturday. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
