University of Texas Rio Grande Valley announces Six UTRGV Golfers Earn Men's and Women's CSC Academic All-District Honors
RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced on Tuesday the 2022-23 CSC Academic All-District At-Large Teams, and six golf student-athletes representing The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) were honored.
To be eligible, student-athletes must have a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or better and be a starter or significant reserve on their team, playing at least 50 percent of contests, with at least one year completed at the institution.
Sophomore Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque, junior Leonardo Novella, and redshirt sophomore Taj Sutherland were honored from men's golf. Duque played in 11 golf tournaments this season while posting a 73.94 stroke average. Novella played in nine tournaments while posting a 75.46 stroke average and Sutherland played in 10 tournaments while posting a 75.46 stroke average.
Senior Julie Lucio, junior Sophia Tejeda, and junior Mercedes Vega represented women's golf. Lucio played in nine golf tournaments this season while posting a 77.11 stroke average, Tejeda also played in nine tournaments while posting a 77.70 stroke average, and Vega played in eight tournaments and posted a 77.13 stroke average.
Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First, second and third-team Academic All-America selections will be announced on June 21 (men) and June 22 (women).
