University of Rio Grande announces RedStorm sweeps Carlow in regular season finale
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande got the Senior Day sweep it was looking for, but the RedStorm went to both ends of the spectrum to get the job done.
After posting a mercy rule-shortened victory in the opening game, it took a late rally for a walk-off win over Carlow University in the back end of their River States Conference doubleheader, Saturday afternoon, at Rio Softball Park.
Rio scored in five of its six at bats for a 9-1 victory in the opener of the twin bill, while rallying for three runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh for a 4-3 triumph in the nightcap.
The RedStorm finished 34-16 overall and 22-8 in conference play with the wins.
Carlow, which was playing its final games as a member of the RSC and the NAIA before going to NCAA Division III next season, finished 15-33 overall and 9-21 in league play.
Rio Grande spotted the Celtics a 1-0 lead in the opener before scoring four times in the home half of the frame to take a lead it would never relinquish.
The RedStorm banged out 14 hits in the victory, 10 of which went for extra bases.
Freshman Gabby Adams (Grove City, OH) homered, doubled and drove in four runs, while junior Lexi Carnahan (Felicity, OH) was 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBI.
Freshman Madison Perry (Portsmouth, OH) added three hits, including a double, in the win, while freshman Kayla Sedgwick (Richwood, OH) went 2-for-3 with a double and a run batted in, junior Caitlyn Brisker (Oak Hill, OH) had a pair of doubles and senior Christen Risner (Wheelersburg, OH) doubled and drove in a run.
Junior Sydney Campolo (New Lexington, OH) went the distance in the pitcher's circle to get the win, allowing seven hits and the one run.
McKenna Pierce went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run batted in for Carlow, while Amanda Hu finished 2-for-2.
Morgan Pierce started and lost for the Celtics, surrendering 10 hits and eight runs over 3-1/3 innings.
Game two saw Carlow push across single runs in the first, third and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead. Two of the three runs were unearned as a result of four Rio Grande errors.
The RedStorm finally began the road back in the home sixth inning when sophomore Boo Sturgill (Wheelersburg, OH) led off with a double before Sedgwick and Brisker drew consecutive walks to load the bases.
Adams hit a sacrifice fly to plate Sturgill, while Sedgwick scored moments later on a throwing error as Brisker stole second. Brisker scored the tying run on a double by Perry.
The seventh inning rally began with a leadoff single by junior Cierra Clark (Plain City, OH). Risner bunted Clark into scoring position and, one out later, Sedgwick singled to center with Clark sliding under the tag home to score the game-winner.
Adams and Clark both had two hits in the victory, while sophomore Hannah Beers (Springfield, OH) earned the win with 3-1/3 innings of three-hit, scoreless relief.
Megan Pollinger suffered the loss in relief for the Celtics.
Clara Niglio led Carlow's offensive attack with three hits, including a double, while Morgan Nedley - the reigning RSC Player of the Week - was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Hannah Gallagher added two hits and an RBI in the loss, while McKenna Pierce finished 2-for-4.
Rio Grande, the RSC's East Division champion, will be the No. 2 overall seed in the upcoming conference tournament, which begins on Thursday afternoon at Little Creek Park in South Charleston, W.Va.
The RedStorm will face the winner of Thursday's Midway-WVU Tech matchup on Friday, at noon
