United States Merchant Marine Academy announces Quality & Quantity Propel Mariners At The Tom Farrell Classic

QUEENS, N.Y. (May 7, 2023) – The USMMA track & field teams only sent four women to the St. John's campus, but they all prospered while the men had nine different medalists during the Tom Farrell Classic.

The guys may have had a long list of hardware, but the women fared well in their own right starting with star jumper Kira Porzio (Palo Cedro, Calif.) doing what she does best, winning the high jump at 1.65m.
Katherine Kerchner (Reading, Pa.) registered a runner-up performance during the 3,000m run, logging a speed of 11:47.45.
Shea Curran (Kellogg, Idaho) was the last podium placer for the ladies, snagging silver in the shot put with a distance of 10.68m while also landing a top-five allotment in the discus toss at 29.83m.
Lastly, Stephanie Schatzman (Virginia Beach, Va.) came up with a pair of top-ten slots, leaping her way to fifth during the triple jump (8.74m) plus tenth for the long jump (4.40m).
For the men's side, two Mariners stood out from the rest in Konnor Bye (Liberty Hill, Texas) and Nathan Fields (Westminster, Md.), both underclassmen who scored themselves two gold medals each.
Bye set a new personal-record in the long jump with a launch of 6.96m to go along with his first-place showing during the triple jump (13.29m).
Fields used his strength to grab his golds, hurling the shot put 12.91 meters and flinging the discus 36.78 meters.
Andrew Carty (Carlsbad, Calif.) also netted a pair of podium spots, topping the chart for the 110 hurdles (17.39) and brandishing the bronze for the 400 hurdles (1:13.85).
Three male members of The Academy finished as runners-up in their respective events including Isaac Clark's (Weddington, N.C.) 1,500m (3:59.43),Kenneth Harrison's (Ellicott City, Md.) high jump (1.80m), and Corey Haney's (Medina, Ohio) personal-record pole vault (3.81m).
Three other King's Point student-athletes brought bronzes back to campus; Rhett Robinson (Douglas, Ga.) threw the discus 30.93 meters, Casey Symons (Harrington Park, N.J.) paced himself to a 9:49.98 in the 3,000m, and Silas Glynn (Folsom, Calif.) set a new low benchmark for the 1,500m at 4:13.24.
