United States Merchant Marine Academy announces Porzio & Bye Lead The Way At STAC’s Spartan Invitational

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Jan. 13, 2023) – The USMMA track & field team took part in the Spartan Invitational hosted by St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. The invitational saw over 500 athletes take part in events, with Division I, II, III schools all competing.

Headlining the women's performances was senior Kira Porzio's (Palo Cedro, Calif.) third place finish in the high jump. She cleared the bar at 1.65m, or five feet-five inches.
On the men's side, the Mariners had four top-10 performances on the day. Sophomore Konnor Bye (Liberty Hill, Texas) came in fourth place in the long jump with a mark of 6.70m (21' 11.75"). Freshman Nathan Fields (Westminster, Md.) placed eighth in the shot put with a 12.34m hurl (40' 6"), while the distance medley relay team of freshmen Luke Zwiesler (Colbert, Wash.), Isaiah Sims (Sunnyvale, Texas), Silas Glynn (Folsom, Calif.) and Isaac Clark (Weddington, N.C.) also came in eighth with a time of 10:45.01. Rounding out the top-10 finishes was Zwiesler, whose 8:51.20 in the 3000m was good for ninth place.
The Mariners will compete at the Ramapo Open next Friday, Jan. 20, at the Armory. The first event is scheduled for 10 a.m. at The Armory in Manhattan. More info on the meet can be found at this link.
