United States Merchant Marine Academy announces Men Finish Second In Rain-Shortened Middlesex Invitational

EDISON, N.J. (April 15, 2023) – The USMMA track & field teams only got to finish approximately half of their events before the skies opened up and forced the meet to end prematurely.

The guys were extremely successful in limited action, finishing behind only Suffolk Community College in the team scores when the final tally came out after 10 of the 18 (55.6%) events wrapped up Saturday evening.

 Konnor Bye (Liberty Hill, Texas) won at least one of his events for the third meet in-a-row, claiming gold in the long jump once again with a distance of 6.69m while also scoring via sixth in the high jump (1.65m). 

Kenneth Harrison (Ellicott City, Md.) got his first taste on the top of the mountain, launching himself a event-best 1.75m in the high jump.

 Isaiah Sims (Sunnyvale, Texas) was the third male student-athlete to come away victorious, running the 400m for a number one time of 49.83 seconds.

 Nathan Fields (Westminster, Md.) was the final Mariners medalist on either side, placing third during the shot put at a 12.80m throw.

 Rounding out the top-five finishes was Grady Ward (Double Oak, Texas) for his long jump of 5.84m.

 The 1,500m run was full of Blue and Gray personal-records as five runners set new benchmarks including Alex Burita (Annandale, Va.) (4:28.10), Elijah Ramthun (Bozrah, Conn.) (4:34.05), Michael Lyon (Jacksonville, Fla.) (4:43.55), Ingo Leeck (Denton, Texas) (4:49.62), and AJ Steiner (Banks, Ore.) (5:01.03).

 Caleb Scheopner (Sahaurita, Ariz.) was the only one to PR twice, doing so regarding the 100m (12.82) as well as the long jump (5.44m).

 Capping the men's personal-bests were Lance Clemons' (Westlake, Ohio) 400m time of 52.19 and Kellen Dewey's (Louisiana, Mo.) shot put toss of 9.46m.

 The top finisher on the women's side was Sayra Raya (Wasco, Calif.) with tenth in the 1,500m (5:12.87) while Sarah Lyon (Battle Creek, Mich.) was among the top-dozen in the 1,500m (5:17.56 – PR) too plus a new PR courtesy of Stephanie Schatzman (Virginia Beach, Va.) sprinting to the finish line in 14.89 seconds during the 100m dash.
