Trinity University announces Casey Hampton Finishes Ninth in Long Jump at NCAA Meet
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Tiger senior Casey Hampton (Houston, Texas / Westbury Christian) finished ninth in the long jump at the NCAA III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday.
Hampton entered the competition ranked 22nd and was the final entry into the field, but he made the most of his opportunity today. The prelims and finals were held back-to-back, with the top nine marks after three attempts moving on to the finals. Hampton hit a jump for 6.90 meters to start things off, then leapt to 7.19 meters on his second attempt. That jump put him into the last spot in the finals.
After fouling his final attempt in prelims and his first attempt in finals, Hampton marked 6.83 and 6.93 meters on his final two jumps. He finished just 0.02 meters shy of All-American status, which is reserved for the top eight finishers in each event.
Hampton qualified after reaching 7.22 meters at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships this year, which was his career-best. He also ranks third in school history with that mark, and is one of only five athletes in school history to jump beyond 7.00 meters.
This is the fourth straight year that Trinity has had a student-athlete competing in the men's long jump, which is also the fourth straight year that a Tiger has finished in the top 10. Sean Majors accomplished the feat in 2019, 2021, and 2022 (there was no NCAA meet in 2020 due to COVID-19).
Sophomore Azariah Anderson (Saint Charles, Mo. / Francis Howell North) will compete in the men's 110-meter hurdles prelims tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. (CT). The finals would be on Saturday afternoon at 12:50 p.m. (CT).
