Southern Utah University announces Softball Drops Doubleheader at Grand Canyon

CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Southern Utah Softball team fell in a road doubleheader at Grand Canyon University. The first game finished up 9-1 and game two ended with a score of 10-2. 

The Thunderbirds scored the first run of the series in the top of the first inning of game one. Freshman Riley Nielson drove a single to left field that scored junior shortstop Miranda Lopez. Grand Canyon took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Thunderbirds would keep game one fairly close until the Lopes broke out in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring five runs.

In game two the Lopes would drive a home run and a double in the bottom of the first inning to score three runs. Southern Utah would get right back in the game in the top half of the third inning scoring two runs. The runs came in when sophomore Amyah Boostedt popped a ball up behind first base which scored two runs. 

Grand Canyon would explode over the next two innings scoring two runs in the third and five more in the fourth. Southern Utah would get one more chance to bat and come up empty to finish the game. 

The Thunderbirds spread five hits across the two games. Leading the charge was Nielson who picked up two hits and an RBI.  

NEXT UP

The Thunderbirds will wrap up the first season of WAC play Saturday. The final game of the year for Southern Utah will begin at 2:00 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats can be found at suutbirds.com.
