Rice University announces Simpson-Sullivan Places Fifth, Rice Concludes Season at NCAAs

AUSTIN – The Rice women's track and field team had a strong close to their season at the NCAA Championships with Tara Simpson-Sullivan placing fifth in the hammer throw. 

Simpson-Sullivan opened the women's competition by grabbing points for the Owls as she jumped from eighth to fifth on her fourth attempt of the day with a throw of 67.00m (219-10). The mark earned her First Team All-American honors for the second time in her career and marks her fifth All-American honor. 

On her final throw with the Owls, Erna Gunnarsdottir was able to move up the board for an 11th-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 17.24m. The mark closes out her incredible career at Rice with her fourth All-American honor. 

In just her freshman campaign, Mckyla Van der Westhuizen closed her impressive debut season by finishing 11th in the javelin with a throw of 52.29m. The mark earns Van der Westhuizen her first All-American honor.
