Reinhardt University announces Lance Dockery and Dylan Lewis Help the Eagles Win Game One of the Southeast Rumble
From February 17, 2023 post.
Waleska, GA - The Eagles got their first game of the Southeast Rumble started off on a great note. The #20 ranked Eagles were taking on #9 ranked Webber International in the first game of four games in the Southeast Rumble. Reinhardt was able to come out on top after several lead changes through the game with a final score of 12 to 11.
This was Webber's second day of the game as they would play the 11:30 am game at LakePoint Sports Complex against Indiana Southeast. The Warriors came from behind in that game to win 6-5.
Reinhardt jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with the highlight coming from Lance Dockery in the bottom of the first inning. Dockery had a solo shot to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. The rest of the early scoring came in the second inning when Dylan Lewis was able to single in Matty Maurer and then Jacob Profit knocked in Alex Coulter and Lewis.
The problems started for the Eagles in the top of the fourth when they started getting a little sloppy with the ball. Several errors by Reinhardt allowed the Warriors to get right back into the game and take the lead, 6-5. They could not hold the lead long as Dockery would get his hot bat on the end of another pitch which he would take yard and also scoring Profit who was on base. Dockery would have two home runs on the day and both were over the left-field fence. This got the lead back for the Eagles at 7-6.
After the next few innings, the lead would not be safe for either team. Both teams had some issues controlling the ball in the later innings and both teams took advantage of this. The Warriors would take the lead back in the fifth inning after pitching relief had a few issues and another error allowed the inning to continue. Webber would lead the game after five innings, 9 to 7.
Dylan Lewis would solo homer in the sixth inning to get one back for the Eagles, 9-8 with the lead still in favor of the Warriors. Reinhardt would do a little more damage again in the bottom of the seventh when a back-to-back wild pitch and balk allowed the Eagles to take the lead 10 to 9. Matty Maurer would double later in the inning which scored Dawson Johns and Reinhardt added one more important run on a sac bunt from Coulter which score Maurer. The Eagles had a nice 12-9 coming out of the seventh which they would keep until the top of the ninth.
In the top of the ninth, relief pitcher Hal Stellies - who had pitched great for the Eagles in the three innings of relief and got them out of a jam in the fifth - had a single from a Warrior lead-off batter. A few errors and a passed ball allowed that runner to score cutting the Eagles' lead to 12-10. Brock Weiss would come in to relieve Stellies and try to finish out the game for the win. Although it was not perfect, Weiss was able to control things enough to get the save for the Eagles. A run would score cutting the lead to just one run, but Weiss would get the final out a superb strikeout giving the Eagles a huge win over a top-ranked opponent.
Ethan Foley would get the start in the game and pitched a solid three innings for the Eagles, but the trouble in the fourth brought an end to his day. Stellies would get the win for his job pitching and giving the Eagles a chance to get the lead back. Weiss picked up a save for closing the game out.
Reinhardt will have Saturday off as the other teams play each other throughout the day and then they will be back for a double-header on Sunday at 11 am and 5 pm. They will conclude the tournament with a matchup with Faulkner on Monday at 2:30 pm start time.
