ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (April 21, 2023) – Head Coach Frank Marcinek and the Susquehanna University men's basketball team were presented the 2022-23 Sam Schoenfeld Award by the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association (CBOA) at a recent ceremony in Atlantic City. The award is given out annually by the association to a program that best exemplifies "the highest degree of sportsmanship, character, and ethics among their players, coaches and spectators." It is the highest honor that the CBOA annually bestows on any collegiate institution.

Coach Marcinek and the River Hawks earned the top seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament with an 11-3 conference record and finishing the season with a 16-10 overall record. Marcink and his staff were coronated the Landmark Coaching Staff of the Year, while Howie Rankine Jr. and Brandon Lavitt received All-Landmark selections. Rankine was also named the Landmark Conference's Defensive Player of the Year and went on to earn NABC All-Region accords.

About the Sam Schoenfeld Award:
Sam Schoenfeld, former college basketball great who possessed a great deal of energy, impeccable honesty and a charismatic personality, was one of the CBOA's founding fathers. Sam espoused integrity and strong character, which set him apart from most men. A brief illness took Sam's life in early 1956 and as a result CBOA decided to memorialize Sam through an award that would be annually presented to a person who exemplified the principles and characteristics so prominently displayed by Sam Schoenfeld. Accordingly, the award is presented to the college or university, which in the judgment of the CBOA membership, best exemplifies "the highest degree of sportsmanship, character, and ethics among their players, coaches and spectators."

This is the highest honor that CBOA annually bestows on any collegiate institution.
