Marist College announces Softball Clinches Berth in Maac Championships

NEW ROCHELLE, New York – The Marist softball team clinched a berth in the MAAC Championships on Friday. The Red Foxes punched their ticket with an 8-1 triumph at Iona in game one of a doubleheader, and followed with a 5-0 victory in game two.
GAME ONE
Marist struck first with a three-run top of the third. Sam Freeland drove in two with a single, and Maddie Pleasants with an RBI double.
Haley Ahr extended Marist's lead to 4-0 with a fourth-inning home run to left field.
In the seventh, Marist added four runs. Isabella Manory scored on an error. Freeland had an RBI single, and Ahr followed with a two-run single.
Iona scored its lone run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Freeland and Ahr each had two hits and three runs driven in. Freeland, Manory, and Hannah Brock scored two runs apiece.
Calista Phippen went the distance and allowed just three hits. She tied her season high with 10 strikeouts and didn't allow a hit until the fifth as she won her 13th game of the season.
GAME TWO
Peyton Pusey tripled to left center on the first pitch of the game and scored on Freeland's groundout.
Shea Walsh scored on a passed ball to give Marist a 2-0 lead in the second.
Marist added two in the fourth. Meghan Davis' single brought home Alyssa Grupp. Hannah Brock followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Walsh.
Pleasants' home in the sixth stretched Marist's lead to 5-0.
Walsh and Pusey each had two hits, and Walsh scored two runs.
Kiley Myers tossed a four-hitter with just one walk and a career-high nine strikeouts. It was Myers' third straight shutout as she extended her scoreless inning streak to 19.1.
RECORDS
Marist is 25-26 overall and now sits in sole possession of third place in the MAAC at 12-6.
Iona is 16-29-1 overall and 8-10 in the MAAC.

Marist closes out the regular season on Saturday at Fairfield.
