Marist College announces Marist Softball Tops Iona in Maac Opening Round

BUFFALO, New York – The third-seeded Marist softball team defeated sixth-seeded Iona by a score of 2-1 in the opening round of the MAAC Championship on Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex.

SUMMARY

In the bottom of the first, Peyton Pusey drew a leadoff walk. She then stole second, went to third on an error. Maddie Pleasants then belted a two-run homer to put the Red Foxes up 2-0.

Iona scored in the top of the fourth as Kayla Haywood's sacrifice fly brought in Jamie Sheeran. However, with runners at the corners and two outs, Kiley Myers came on in relief and induced a pop-up to get out of the jam.

Iona got a runner to second base in the top of the seventh, but was unable to push the tying run across.

STATS

Pleasants reached safely in all three of her plate appearances, with two walks following her home run.

Calista Phippen pitched the first 3.2 innings and struck out five.

Shea Walsh threw out two runners attempting to steal behind the plate.

Myers allowed just two hits over the final 3.1 and struck out two. She threw just 45 pitches as her record improved to 11-5.

Haywood went 2-for-2 in addition to her sacrifice fly.

Kara Zazzaro pitched a complete game for Iona with seven strikeouts. She gave up just two hits.

Marist is now 26-28.

Iona fell to 18-30-1.

Marist will face second-seeded Mount St. Mary's on Thursday at 11 a.m.

The game will be shown on ESPN+.
