Lehigh University announces O’Neill Tabbed Patriot League Rookie of the Week

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – First-year right-handed pitcher Shane O'Neill was selected as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week for his performances on the mound this past week.
O'Neill earned a couple of wins in as many appearances this past week. In his first collegiate start, O'Neill tossed two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit on his way to the second win of his career. He was able to record the final two defensive outs of the game versus Holy Cross, entering the game in the top of the ninth of an extra-inning game with one strikeout in route to a walk-off in the bottom of the ninth to secure his second victory of the week and third of his first-year campaign.
Sophomore Jake Whitlinger and senior Ben Christian also were named as honorable mentions by the Patriot League.
Whitlinger produced eight hits this past week, going 8-for-19 with three runs scored and two RBIs, one of them being when he recorded Lehigh's first walk-off of the season to defeat Holy Cross, 5-4, in extra innings. He also stole two bases and was a perfect 1.000 fielding with eight putouts in center field. In game one against Holy Cross, Whitlinger went 4-for-5 at the plate with the game-winning RBI, scored two runs, and stole a base. He also had a multi-hit game in the win over Army West Point, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Christian started in the second game of the Sunday twin bill with Holy Cross, throwing 5.1 innings and did not allow the first hit of the game until the fifth inning for his third victory of the season. He gave up just two hits and one run with two strikeouts to conclude his career.
Lehigh wrapped up the 2023 season with its third year recording 20 or more wins and reaching at least 10 wins in Patriot League competition.
