INDIANA, Pa. – IUP tennis assistant David Jacobs was named the 2023 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year, the organization announced Tuesday.

Jacobs stepped in from his assistant role as the head coach on an interim basis this season for Larry Peterson.

He helped navigate IUP through a grueling nonconference schedule, finishing with a 14-10 overall record and a perfect 6-0 mark in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.

The Crimson Hawks captured a regular season division title, the program's third consecutive conference championship, a regional title and a spot in the NCAA Round of 16. IUP defeated Slippery Rock for the third time in 2022-23 to close out their portion of the NCAA Atlantic Regional, part of a seven-match winning streak entering the NCAA National Tournament in Orlando.

The Hawks finished the regular season ranked second in the Atlantic Region, hosting an NCAA regional pod with Slippery Rock, Shaw and Fairmont State in early May.

Jacobs worked with four all-conference selections in his first season with the program. IUP got back into the national rankings in early April, closing the season ranked 45th in the latest ITA release.

ITA Atlantic Region Awards
IUP was well represented in the major regional awards announced by the ITA on Tuesday. In addition to Jacobs' assistant coach of the year honor, Joanna Stralka was named the ITA Atlantic Region Most Improved Senior.

The Division II Playing Awards include: Wilson ITA Coach of the Year, ITA Assistant Coach of the Year, Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship, ITA Rookie of the Year, ITA Most Improved Senior, ITA Senior Player of the Year and ITA Community Service Award.

The national award winners will be announced next Tuesday, June 6th.
