Indiana University of Pennsylvania announces Jacobs awarded ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year honors
INDIANA, Pa. – IUP women's tennis coach David Jacobs received national recognition on Tuesday, earning the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Assistant Coach of the Year award.
Jacobs was named the ITA Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year on May 30, taking the reins of the program from his assistant spot during a successful 2022-23 season. Previously a volunteer assistant with the program, Jacobs took over on an interim basis for long-time head coach Larry Peterson in 2022-23, helping IUP finish 14-10 and undefeated in conference play.
The Crimson Hawks captured a regular season division title, the program's third consecutive conference championship, a regional title and a spot in the NCAA Round of 16. IUP defeated Slippery Rock for the third time in 2022-23 to close out their portion of the NCAA Atlantic Regional, part of a seven-match winning streak entering the NCAA National Tournament in Orlando.
The Hawks finished the regular season ranked second in the Atlantic Region, hosting an NCAA regional pod with Slippery Rock, Shaw and Fairmont State in early May. IUP closed out the season second in the region with four student-athletes ranked in the final ITA regional listing.
Jacobs worked with four all-conference selections in his first season as interim head coach with the program. IUP got back into the national rankings in early April, closing the season ranked 45th in the final ITA release on May 24.
