Howard University announces Swimming & Diving Opens NEC Championships with Four New Records

GENEVA, Ohio (February 21, 2023) – Howard University men's and women's swimming & diving program made an immediate impact on Day One of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships, setting four new records.

 
Opening night saw the men's and women's 800 Free Relay event.
 
On the men's side, seniors Mark-Anthony Beckles (Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago), Reese Samuel (Pittsburgh), Miles Simon (Atlanta) and Luke-Kennedy Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas) won the event with a new meet record of 6:35.84, which was also a new program benchmark.
 
Simon led off in that same event, swimming a new school mark of 1:36.29.
 
For the women, graduate Madison Freeland (Glenside, Pa.), sophomore Zaylie-Elizabeth Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas) and newcomers Skylar Debnam (Chandler, Ariz.) and Zuilda Nwaeze (Columbia, Md.) took fourth overall with a new school record (7:37.25).
 
After two events, HU men lead the way with 40 points while the Bison women are in fourth place with 30 points.
 
The action continues Wednesday (Feb. 22), beginning with the prelims at 10 a.m., followed by the final round at 6 p.m.
