Houston Christian University announces T&F: Pecora Leads Huskies on Day Two at SLC Outdoors

Rebecca Pecora sets a new program record in the long jump and earns a pair of medals

Sophomore Rebecca Pecora won gold in the long jump and silver in the heptathlon on day two at the 2023 Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships to lead the HCU track & field team on Friday at Memorial Stadium.
 
Pecora opened the day with a bang, setting a new school long jump record and earning silver in the heptathlon with a PR total of 5,059 points. She began her day with a school and Southland Conference Championship record mark of 6.31m/20-8.50 for 946 points. She then added 375 points in the javelin with a throw of 24.47m/80-3.0 before finishing with 766 points in the 800 meters with a time of 2:24.28. Freshman Samantha Rabius placed fourth in her first-ever heptathlon with 4,294 points while senior Grace Perez took fifth with 4,280 points.
 
Pecora quickly followed up her silver medal with a gold in the long jump, leaping a wind-aided 6.42m/21-0.75 (+3.3). Sophomore Brianna Brand just missed the podium, placing fourth, with a jump of 6.22m/20-5.0 (+2.5) with freshman Reem Tammam jumping 6.17m/20-3.0 for a new PR. Those three combined to earn 18 points for the Huskies.
 
Spencer Blake picked up a point for the men in the shot put, placing eighth with a top throw of 15.04m/49-4.25. Destiny Quintanilla came in fifth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 11:17.31 and Nate Allen placed seventh on the men's side, finishing in 10:18.56.
 
Garrett Gibson punched his way into another final, winning his heat in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 13.98 (+2.3), giving him a chance at medals in both the 110h and the 400h on Saturday. In the women's 100 meter hurdles, Lanaye Keys ran a PR time of 14.66 to qualify for the finals.
 
HCU advanced three to the finals of the men's 800 meters led by Alex Piquart who won his heat with a time of 1:52.44. Krzysyztof Turski and Travis Jacobs also advanced with times of 1:53.28 and 1:53.46, respectively. The other Husky to advance past the prelims was Eline Mast, moving on in the 800m with a heat-winning mark of 2:16.08.
 
The HCU women ended the day in third place with 41 team points. The final day of the 2023 SLC Outdoor Championships takes place on Saturday, May 6, at noon.
