Garrett Gibson and Jessica Rabius will compete in Sacramento next week

HCU seniors Garrett Gibson and Jessica Rabius are officially entered to compete at the NCAA West First Round next week on Wednesday and Thursday at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State.

Gibson will kick off the running events this year, running the 110-meter hurdles first round at 8:00 p.m. CST on Wednesday, May 24, while Rabius will run in the first round of the 800 meters on Thursday, May 25, at 9:50 p.m. CST.

Gibson heads into the event with the 33rd-fastest time this season among the 48 competitors, running 13.85 to win the gold at the 2023 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships earlier this month. The senior hurdler will be running at the fourth NCAA First Round of his career. In 2019 he ran the 400-meter hurdles before running both the 110h and the 400h in 2021 and 2022. Gibson is the HCU program record-holder in both the 110h and the 400h.

Rabius, meanwhile, ranks 10th among the 48 runners in the 800m with a school record time of 2:04.64, set a month ago at the Rice J. Fred Duckett Twilight meet. This marks the second time Rabius will compete at an NCAA First Round meet, having run the 1500 meters last season in Fayetteville, Ark. In addition to the 800m, Rabius owns the HCU outdoor records in both the 1500m and the 5000 meters.

Both Huskies will be aiming for top-24 finishes in their events in order to advance to the quarterfinals, taking place Friday, May 26, and Saturday, May 27. Then, the top-12 finishers in the quarterfinals earn a spot in the semifinals at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas from June 7-10.
