Hillsdale College announces Chargers' Averi Parker earns second G-MAC Field Athlete of the Week honor (April 24-May 1)
From May 1, 2023 post.
Already a perennial NCAA DII national meet qualifier, sophomore Averi Parker earned a second G-MAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week award this season thanks to standout performances in two events, the conference office announced on Monday.
The Hillsdale thrower improved her provisional marks in not one but two events at Thursday's Walsh Tune-up, increasing her chances of qualifying for the 2023 NCAA DII Outdoor Championships to be held at the end of May in Pueblo, Colorado, and making her fourth national meet appearance in as many opportunities.
Parker won the shot put competition at Walsh with a throw of 14.74 meters, just shy of her personal best and the eighth best mark in the country at the NCAA DII level. On the same day, Parker also took runner-up in the hammer throw, with a personal best mark of 55.07 meters that moves her up to 17th in the nation in that event among NCAA DII competitors.
As a freshman last year at the NCAA Indoor meet, Parker placed eighth with a career-best throw of 14.81 meters, earning NCAA DII All-American honors in her first trip to nationals. She also competed in the 2022 NCAA DII Outdoor and 2023 NCAA DII Indoor national meets, and thanks to her shot put throw is now in line to compete for the fourth time and hopefully add to her trophy haul in May.
Parker and the Chargers next travel to Ashland on Wednesday for the G-MAC Outdoor Championships, a three-day event. Hillsdale is looking to defend its 2022 title and a strong performance from Parker and Hillsdale's throws crew will be critical to the team's hopes of repeating.
