Florida Institute of Technology announces Softball Sweeps Eckerd with a Walk-Off Win

MELBOURNE, FLA.- Florida Tech completed the comeback in game two with a four-run seventh inning to sweep Eckerd at home, for the first time since April 25-26, 2019.

 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Final: Florida Tech 8, Eckerd 4

Records: Florida Tech (19-19, 9-11 SSC) | Eckerd (20-11, 5-9 SSC)

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • Florida Tech jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Ella Niles got caught in a pickle between third base and home plate and Niles safely slid into home to get the Panthers on the board.
  • Eckerd responded scoring three runs on three hits in the top of the 3rd inning.
  • In the top of the 4th inning, with the bases loaded, Kelly McLaughlin was hit by a pitch and a run would cross the plate to cut the deficit to just one run.
  • On the next play, the Tritons attempted to get McLaughlin out at second, but McLaughlin would be called safe, and Mya Ogbodiewgu scored a run to tie things up.
  • A single up the middle by Cheyenne Nelson drove in McLaughlin to give Tech a 4-3 lead.
  • Back-to-back doubles by Jolie Miracle and Mikayla Lewin would score three more runs.
  • The Panthers scored six runs in the fourth inning.
  • The Tritons tacked on one run in the top of the 5th.
  • In the bottom of the 6th inning, an error by Eckerd's center fielder allowed Nelson to make it all the way to third base.
  • Miracle sacrifice fly scored Nelson to give the Panthers an 8-4 lead.
  • Sam Guider started the game for Tech. Guider threw 3.2 innings allowing three runs on three hits before exiting the game with an injury.
  • Allison Platon came entered in the middle of the 4th inning. Platon threw 3.1 innings, giving up just one run and two hits.
  • Platon earned her ninth win of the season.


GAME TWO:

Final: Florida Tech 7, Eckerd 6

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • In the bottom of the 1st inning, Lewin's single drove in Miracle and Nelson to give Tech a 2-0 lead.
  • The Tritons had an answer for the Panthers. Eckerd scored three runs in the 2nd inning to take a 3-2 lead.
  • In the top of the 3rd, a 2-run homer by Skylar Redish extended Eckerd's lead to 5-2.
  • Lewin's sacrifice fly drove in Layna Pollock in the third inning to cut the margin to two runs.
  • Eckerd tacked on one more run in the top of the 7th inning to push their lead back to three runs.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, the Panthers started a comeback rally.
  • Pollock reached on an infield hit followed by a single to left field from Nelson. Miracle's double to left field scored two runs and the Panthers needed just one run to tie things up.
  • Lewin singled, advanced to second on the throw, and scored the tying run.
  • Tied at 6-6, Ella Gibson stepped up to the plate and reached first on a throwing error, which allowed Lewin to score the winning run from second base and Florida Tech would walk it off to win 7-6.
  • Alex Hendrian started the game throwing three innings, allowing five runs and four hits.
  • Allison Platon earned her 10th win of the season. Platon pitched four innings giving up just one run on two hits.



BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Florida Tech is now 88-37 against Eckerd in the all-time series.
  • This is the Panther's first sweep of Eckerd since April 25-26, 2019.
  • Cheyenne Nelson was 3-6 at the plate with two RBIs and three runs.
  • Kelly McLaughlin was 3-5 at the plate with one RBI and two doubles.
  • Jolie Miracle was 4-7 with a season-high five RBIs and two runs.
  • Mikayla Lewin tied her career-high with 5 RBIs.
  • Allison Platon threw a combined 7.1 innings and allowed just two runs and four hits. She struck out six batters.
  • Combined, Florida Tech scored 15 runs and had 18 hits on the day.


UP NEXT: Florida Tech will travel to No.2 Tampa next weekend for a three-game series. Game one will be on Thursday, April 6th. The first pitch is set for 6 PM.
