Binghamton University announces Still Running Strong
VESTAL, N.Y. – One year ago, Emily Mackay and Dan Schaffer were the two most successful student-athletes at Binghamton University. Each of them were named All-Americans in track & field, won America East individual titles in track and cross country and were named the Binghamton University Female and Male Athletes of the Year.
Today, Mackay and Schaffer are still flourishing on the track – but at the professional level. Mackay runs for New Balance in Boston while Schaffer competes for Zap Endurance, which is based out of North Carolina.
This coming weekend, the duo will be competing at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mackay will compete in the women's 1,500 and 3,000 at the USA Indoor Meet. Schaffer will take part in the men's 3,000. Each of them had to be selected to run in their events, based on how their current indoor seasons have progressed.
"Emily and Dan have been adjusting very well to their professional running lives," Binghamton distance coach Annette Acuff said, "I'm incredibly proud of them and truly enjoy seeing how competitive their indoor seasons have been."
The current Binghamton track & field teams were in Boston this weekend for the Valentines Invitational. So too were Mackay and Schaffer. With the Valentine's meet attracting many professional and unattached athletes, Mackay won the women's 3,000 with a time of 8:40.75. Schaffer, meanwhile, clocked a mile time of 3:59.
This weekend, the current Bearcat teams will head back to Boston for the America East Indoor Championships while Mackay and Schaffer head to Albuquerque. The women's 3,000 takes place on Friday at 2 p.m. local time (4 p.m. EST) while the men's 3,000 will start at 4 p.m. local time (6 p.m. EST). The women's 1,500, meanwhile, goes off on Saturday at 2:58 p.m. local time (4:58 p.m. EST).
Coverage of Friday's events at the USA Indoor Championships can be seen on USATF.TV. Saturday's events will air live on NBC.
