Alliance supports sale and redevelopment of UW–Milwaukee at Waukesha campus

The Waukesha County Business Alliance announced on Sep. 25 its strong support for the proposed redevelopment of the former University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee at Waukesha campus, following the County Board's September 22 vote to authorize the property's sale and F Street's proposed development.

According to the Alliance, this property is one of the City of Waukesha’s last significant opportunities for large-scale development. The group said redeveloping the site would return it to productive use, expand housing options, support economic growth, and strengthen long-term competitiveness in the community. "For more than a decade, one of the top challenges facing businesses in Waukesha and throughout the region has been attracting and retaining workers. The availability and affordability of housing are critical to our ability to attract talent and provide opportunities for people who want to live and work in Waukesha," said the Alliance.

The organization said that with city borders fixed after the Lake Michigan water diversion, strategic land use is necessary. It highlighted that adding a greater variety of housing—including attainable options for young professionals, families, and other workforce members—would help keep Waukesha competitive by providing more people with opportunities to build careers and contribute locally.

The Alliance stated that "the proposed redevelopment is also consistent with the City’s long-term planning goals and the Common Council’s decision to allow the property to transition to flexible residential use." It added that thoughtful redevelopment could complement neighborhoods, make efficient use of infrastructure, support local businesses, and benefit the broader community.

"Our members have a vested interest in Waukesha’s future, and we believe this is an opportunity the community should embrace," said representatives from the Alliance. "Responsible growth and additional housing will help address workforce needs, support economic development, and ensure Waukesha remains a competitive and desirable place to live, work, and raise a family."

The project has received backing from both business leaders within its coalition as well as broader membership representing over 1,200 companies employing more than 120,000 people in diverse industries across Waukesha County, according to the official website. The organization works through advocacy efforts focused on strengthening local prosperity by promoting economic growth.
