Alderson Broaddus University announces AB Sweeps West Liberty
The Alderson Broaddus softball team swept their double head over West Liberty on Tuesday, March 21. The Battlers snapped their 15-game losing streak with their wins.
Game 1: The first game of the doubleheader was headlined by strong pitching from both teams. In the first inning, Meadow Uncapher held the Hilltoppers to no hits. The Battlers were able to get one hit with a single by Bri Sersevic.
The next four innings remained scoreless for both teams. Meadow Uncapher held the Hilltoppers to 1 hit and racked up 4 strikeouts in those 4 innings.
In the bottom of the 6th, Bri Sersevic led off the Battlers with a walk. After a pitching change for West Liberty, Bri Marietta singled to left field to put runners on 1st and 2nd for the Battlers. Laklyn Blackburn doubled to center field to score Bri Sersevic. The Battlers would hold on to get the 1-0 win over West Liberty in the 1st game.
The Battlers were led by Grace Sobeck, Breonna Marietta, Bri Sersevic with a single each, and Laklyn Blackburn with a double. Meadow Uncapher pitched a complete game totaling 5 strikeouts and only allowing 4 hits.
Game 2: The bats were hot for the Battlers in game two of the doubleheader against West Liberty. The scoring would begin in the bottom of the 1st for the Battlers. Bri Sersevic would walk and then eventually steal second. A. Borja reached 1st on an error by the second baseman which would advance Sersevic to third. Borja rounded first which got her caught in a pickle. In the confusion of the pickle, West Liberty would allow Sersevic to score easily from third.
In the bottom of the 2nd, the Battlers did not hold back. Grace Sobeck singled to left field followed by back to back singles by Hailee Culbertson and Riley Vunak to load the bases. Bri Sersevic would walk to bring home Sobeck. Angelina Borja would hit the 4th single of the inning to drive home Culbertson. The scoring did not end as L.Gerland would double to drive in 2 runs for the Battlers. AB would tack on one more run in the inning to take a 6-0 lead.
AB would drive home a run in the third and West Liberty would follow that up with a run of their own in the 5th. In the Bottom of the 5h, Riley Vunak would hit an RBI single to take a 7 run lead over the Hilltoppers.
AB would go into the top of the 7th up 8-1. West Liberty would do their best to fight back with a 2 run Homerun however ABwas able to hold on and get the win.
The Battlers were led by Grace Sobeck with a single and a double, Hailee Culbertson, and Riley Vunak with two singles each. Lawson Gerland with a double. Bri Sersevic and Angelina Borja with a single each. The pitching was led by Amber Corley would pitched a complete game with 3 strikeouts and allowing only 5 hits.
The Batters will play at Fairmont state this Saturday in a double header at 1pm and 3pm.
