Alcorn State University announces Southern Blanks Lady Braves Softball in Opening Game of Series
The Alcorn State softball team played well defensively but could not get the offense moving, falling 2-0 to Southern University Saturday afternoon. Senior Alexa Veamoi led the Lady Braves in the circle, pitching 6.0 innings, tallying three strikeouts, and allowing six hits and two runs (one earned).
The Athens, Ga. native has pitched 90.2 innings and has lowered her ERA to 4.86 this season as Alcorn moves to 5-15 overall and 2-2 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Three Lady Braves connected for hits against the Jaguars. Marsha Hunt delivered a double, while Genise Wells and Sarah Kennedy had one hit each.
Southern struck early, putting a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Jaguar's lead-off hitter Asia George singled to the shortstop and then advanced to second on a single from Kameryn Adkins. She moved to third on a hit by Sydney Wesley and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Anabella Valadez.
The Alcorn defense prevented additional Southern runs through four innings, assisting Veamoi to two 1-2-3 innings. Hunt finished the game with nine putouts at first base, and Jillian Walters and Kristian Edwards had three each.
The Jaguars added one more run in the sixth. Wesley reached on an error by the shortstop. Blair Willis came in to pinch run and stole second base. She then claimed the final two bases on a single by McKenzie Ogden.
The Lady Braves return to Lady Jaguar Field on Sunday, March 19, for the final two games of the three-game series. The first contest of the doubleheader is set to begin at 11 a.m.
