The Lady Braves softball team takes the Arkansas – Pine Bluff series but falls short of the sweep, splitting the doubleheader against the Golden Lions on Saturday. Alcorn State won the first contest 3-2 but lost 7-5 in game two to move to 5-14 on the season and 2-1 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Kennedy Terry and Marsha Hunt led the Lady Braves at the plate, connecting for two hits on three at-bats. Hunt's appearance also included a triple and two RBIs to help advance Alcorn In scoring.

Kiri Parker was credit with the pitching victory. The Laurel, Miss. native threw the entire game for 11 strikeouts, seven hits, two runs (one earned), and three walks.

The Lady Braves got an early lead in game one, scoring two runs in the first frame. Terry connected for a single to make it to first and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hannah Miller took first on balls, and Hunt tripled to score Terry and Miller to give Alcorn a 2-0 advantage going into the second.

The Golden Lions cut the Lady Braves' lead to 2-1, bringing home an unearned run on an error by the catcher.

UAPB tied Alcorn 2-2 in the fifth, adding a second run on a double.

The Lady Braves claimed the victory in the final frame. Jamyiyah Cotton singled and went to third on a hit by Kristian Edwards. Another single from Terry would score Cotton and give Alcorn the 3-2 victory.

More story to come for game two when stats become available.

Alcorn will continue SWAC play next week, traveling to Baton Rouge, La., for a three-game series versus Southern University. The first contest will be Friday, March 17, at 5 p.m.
