Alcorn State University announces Lady Braves Drop Two on Friday at Shamrock Classic

The Lady Braves dropped a pair of games on Friday, falling 9-1 to Iowa and 7-1 to Nebraska – Omaha on the first day of the Adam Brown Memorial Shamrock Classic hosted by Central Arkansas.

Kelsey Lockridge went a combined 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI to lead the Lady Braves, while Genise Wells scored a run, and Jamyiyah Cotten was credited with an RBI.

Game One (ASU 1, Iowa 9)The Lady Brave struck first, scoring the first run in the second inning. Lockridge led off with a single down the left line and then gained two bases on an error by the Iowa shortstop. Cotton scored Lockridge on a sacrifice fly.

Iowa answered in the bottom of the frame with two runs to gain a 2-1 advantage. With one on base, Skylinn Pogue hit a home run to left field to run the bases and bring Grace Banes home.

The Hawks scored six runs in the fourth inning. Six hits and one Alcorn error marked the frame.

They went on to score their final run in the sixth. Denali Loecker scored Tatianna Roman on a single to right field.

Kiri Parker took the loss on the mound for the Lady Braves. She occupied the circle for five innings for one strikeout, five walks, nine hits, and nine runs (six earned). She moves to 1-4 on the season.

Tatianna Roman led Iowa at the plate. She connected for three hits, including a double, on four plate appearances for one RBI and two runs.

Breanna Vasquez captured her third pitching victory of the season. She pitched for 5.0 innings with nine strikeouts, one hit, one unearned run, and two walks.

Game Two (ASU 1, Omaha 7)

Omaha had two high-scoring innings in their victory over Alcorn Friday night. The Durango grabbed three runs in the first fame. A double down the left line from the at of Maggie O'Brien brought in Marra Cramer. Obrien would then steal home, and Sydney Ross came in on a throw.

The second and third frames passed with little action, but the Lady Braves would make it to the scoreboard at the top of the fourth. Wells singled to the shortstop and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hannah Miller. Lockrigdge then hit a single to left field to bring Wells home.

Omaha added four runs in the sixth inning for the 7-1 victory. Ross hit a home run for one RBI. Jaelle Johnson hit a double down the left line to score Alex Olson. Sophie Cerveny tripled to bring home Johnson, and a bases-loaded hit by pitch allowed Jenna Marshall to score.

Ta'Niyah Fletcher was credited with the loss in the circle. She pitched for 5.1 innings with four strikeouts, three walks, seven hits, and seven earned runs.

Ross led the Durango at the mound. She had a 2-for-2 appearance, including one home run, for two runs and one RBI.

Sydney Nuismer (5-1) earned the pitching win. She threw for six innings, seven strikeouts, three hits, one earned run, and one walk.

The Lady Braves will be back in action for day two of the Adam Brown Memorial Shamrock Classic on Saturday, March 4. They will take on Omaha again at 11:30 a.m. and then close the day against South Dakota at 4:30 p.m.
