HOLLAND, Mich. – For the first time since 2014, the Albion College baseball team has won the season series against Hope College.
By salvaging a split on Friday after winning the single game Thursday, the Britons take the series with the Flying Dutchmen. Senior Mark Lauro drove in the game-winning run in the nightcap, going 3 for 4, driving in three in the game.
GAME ONE: Hope 7 Albion 1
Despite jumping out to an early lead, the Britons allowed seven unanswered runs for the hosts to prevail in game one. Albion's lone run was an RBI single from sophomore Carson Dunn.
Hope's pitching shut down the Brits, striking out 10 Albion hitters.
GAME TWO: Albion 4 Hope 2
Looking for redemption, Lauro got things started with a solo shot in the top of the first. The homer was the senior's third of the season.
Hope answered in the bottom of the second with a solo home run off starter Daniel Burzdewicz. The freshman went 4.2 strong innings, allowing just four hits and one run. The hosts scratched across a second run in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 2-1 lead into the late innings.
In just his second collegiate start, freshman Garrett Draper led off the seventh with a walk and stole second. Two batters later, Draper came around to score on an RBI single to left center off the bat of Dunn.
After a fielding error by the Flying Dutchmen, there were two runners in scoring position for Lauro. Opting to pitch to the hot Lauro, the senior smoked a line drive into right field, driving in both runners for a 4-2 lead.
The two runs would be enough for Luke Robertson and Andrew Renner. Robertson earned the win, tossing 3.1 innings, allowing just one run. Renner came on for the save, striking out the final two batters and slamming his right fist into his glove in celebration following the victory.
With a week off for exams, the Brits will host Trine University on Apr. 28 for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
