UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Colt Sherrell finished second and Jose Suryadinata birdied his final three holes to move into third place to lead Idaho to the team title at the 2023 Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay.

The Vandals led wire-to-wire finished one-over for the tournament as a team, finished 11 strokes ahead of host Seattle U and Pac-12 foe Oregon State who tied for second at 12-over on the team score. Northern Colorado was fourth at 13-over and Michigan State finished 14-over for fifth place in the competitive field.

Sherrell was two-under on the back nine to get to even on the day and four-under for the tournament. The tournament will be the final in the home state for the senior captain who hails from the Seattle area. He was two-over on the front nine, but rallied with birdies on 12, 13 and 18.

"Colt played like the guy we know him to be," head coach David Nuhn said. "He is a great player who is going contend to win. It was really cool to see him go out and play well in front of his friends and family and his hard work paying off close to home."

Suryadinata was two-over on the day entering the final three holes, but he closed with three consecutive birdies. He had six birdies on the day.

Sam Johnson was two under entering the day, but finished four-over, completing a two-over 215 for the tournament, finishing tied for 12th for the tournament.

Matt McGann finished with a final score of 224 (+11) to finish in a tie for 52nd. Joe Sykes tied for 62nd with a final score of 227 (+14).

TJ Patterson, playing as an independent, closed the tournament at 237 (+24) to finish T90th.

"I am really proud of the guys' preparation. We played a lot in tough weather and got out in the elements to prepare for what we were going to face," Nuhn said. "Chambers Bay is an absolute battle of our course. The work that we are doing, getting up at 6 a.m. and getting into the weight room with Brandon (Mikulecky) and it is really paying off. You could see it today."

The tournament win is the second of the season along with Derek Dolenc Invitational in Illinois in the fall. The Vandals now won two tournaments in one season for the first time since 2014-15. Big Sky member Sacramento State was also in the field, finishing tied for 14th at 48-over par. Boise State finished 13th, 43 strokes behind the Vandals.

Idaho is off until April 14-16 when they head to Davis, Calif., for the El Macero Classic, the final tournament of the regular season ahead of the Big Sky Championship on April 24-26.

"We are going to enjoy this, but now it is just a matter of getting used to winning and now we know that we can go wire-to-wire and show up for that third round," Sherrell said. "We just need to go and do it again. Nobody on this team has to be told to go back to work, we are all going to get what need done to be ready to go for the conference championship."
